Important Info
If you own or are employed at a business or government facility that regularly checks ID, the following information will be important to you:
As of April 21, 2008, the state of New Mexico began issuing new secure driver's licenses and identification (ID) cards to protect New Mexicans from identity theft. All applicants for a driver's license, whether first-time, out-of-state transfers, renewal or replacement, will be issued a temporary extension while their regular card is being processed and mailed.
The applicant's old driver's license or ID card will be hole-punched and returned to them. The temporary extension is valid for 45 days from the date of issue. When used as a form of identification, the temporary driver's license or ID extension is only valid when used in combination with another form of official government photo identification, such as a passport or previous driver's license or identification card.
