The New Driver's License
If you are employed at a business or government facility that regularly checks I.D., the following information will be important to you:
As of April 21, 2008, the state of New Mexico began using a new secure driver's license to protect New Mexicans from identity theft. MVD customers -- first time driver's license applicants, out-of-state driver's license applicants, renewals, replacements and ID card applicants -- will be issued a temporary extension while their regular license is being processed and mailed.
Their old license will be hole-punched. The temporary extension is valid for 45 days from date of issue. The temporary extension and the hole-punched license (or another form of official government photo identification e.g. a passport or New Mexico ID card for first time drivers) are only valid when presented together.
