First Time Applicants

If you are a first-time applicant for a driver's license or identification card (ID), you will be issued a temporary extension that you can use until your regular card has been processed and mailed.

The temporary extension is valid for 45 days from the date of issue. For driving purposes, the temporary driver's license extension is valid as a stand-alone document. The temporary extension is valid for identification purposes only when used in combination with another form of official government photo identification, such as a passport or previous driver's license or identification card.

You should receive your new, regular card by mail within two weeks. If you don't receive your regular driver?s license or ID within 20 days, call MVD at (888) 683-4636.

As a first-time applicant for a New Mexico DL or ID card, you'll have to provide one (1) proof of identity, one (1) proof of identification number and two (2) proofs of New Mexico residency.
